Aircraft Museums

There are over 900 aircraft museums located in the US and Canada. They come in two basic varieties - static and living.

Static museums have no flyable aircraft. All aircraft are on static display only. A typical example is our good buddies at the Air Mobility Command Museum (AMC) Museum at Dover AFB, DE.

Living museums have a number of airplanes that still fly. They usually have a number of static aircraft as well. Both types of museums also have a plethora of aviation artifacts on display.

A great example of a living museum is American Airpower (AAP) at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, NY. Our good friends at AAP have a great lineup of retired military aircraft called warbirds.

Not all of the flyable aircraft located at this museum are owned by the museum. They are privately owned by aviation enthusiasts who choose to share their investment with the public.

In the photo above, some of the aircraft shown at American Airpower are visiting aircraft like those from Warbirds Over Long Island and the Collings Foundation. This particular photo was taken at AAP's Flight of Aces program held over Labor Day weekend every year. It's not a true air show, but you will see AAP's aircraft fly as well as the visiting aircraft.

Over the last five years we visited many aviation museums in the US and we offer up our reviews. Some of these museums are free while others charge admission. You will probable find your favorite airplane and discover some you did not know existed, for indeed, some of these aircraft are very rare.
